About our organization

The Quadpara Association of the Western Cape (QAWC) is an organisation that strives to improve the lives of as well as fight for the rights of quadriplegics and paraplegics in the Western Cape. With our office in Durbanville, we fall under the umbrella of the Quadpara Association of South Africa (QASA) whose offices are in Pinetown, KwaZulu Natal. We are a non-discriminatory organisation, and have members from different and diverse areas in the Western Cape.

Objectives of QAWC

• To enhance, protect and promote the interests of Quadriplegics and Paraplegics.
• To establish Homes in the form of Self Help Centers.
• To assist and advise Quadriplegics, Paraplegics and their families during the transitional period from rehabilitation to life back in the community.
• To assist, where possible, in obtaining equipment, aids and special appliances from public and private sources needed by quadriplegics / paraplegics.
• To generate funds from public and private sources to promote and achieve the goals of the Association.
• To assist and support QASA in achieving their goals.

Existing Projects

• House Quasar, the first self-help centre in the Western Cape situated in Parow that accommodates 7 quadriplegics. Queries – 021 939-7824

• House Andries Olivier, opened in August 2001 situated in Durbanville and accommodates 12 quadriplegics. Queries – 021 975-5459

• Masonic Home for Quadriplegics, a beautiful modern home situated in Uitzicht, Durbanville and accommodates 6 quadriplegics. Queries – 021 979-1490

• Disabled Driver Training – The Association has a hand-controlled vehicle, which is available to members that want to obtain their drivers license. Contact the secretary for details.

• Outreach project, assisting disabled individuals in disadvantaged areas with assistive devices such as wheelchairs, medical supplies, cushions and computers etc.

• Peer Counseling Project, we offer counseling and guidance to quadriplegics and paraplegics at Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre.

• Sport, giving support and assistance to wheelchair rugby and darts. Quad Rugby – Raven Benny 021 703-7230 or 073 144 2501

• Wheelchair Derby, Annual fundraiser for wheelchair users to have a memorable fun day out. To create awareness about people who are wheelchair users and the opportunity to compete against one another. To create awareness about QAWC as well as to raise much needed funds.

Services and Projects of QASA available to QAWC Members

• Education Fund, Scholarships are available to members who qualify to study or develop skills at an institution of their choice.

• Sabat Batteries, Members using power wheelchairs have access to “free” batteries once a year.

• Rolling Inspiration, A quarterly lifestyle magazine for people with mobility impairments distributed by subscription.

• Quad Squad Day, An annual fundraising campaign presented to the public through the Pick n Pay group. Profits from the campaign go towards building developments in order to accommodate independent living.

Social Events we organise for our members annually

• Ratanga Junction, a lovely day for an outing with a friend/helper.

• Table Mountain, a spectacular scenic outing to one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Cape Town.
